OTTAWA, Kan. – No. 20 Southwestern College's high-powered offense overwhelmed Ottawa University on Saturday afternoon at AdventHealth Field, handing the Braves a 61-10 defeat.
The Moundbuilders (3-1) piled up 651 yards of total offense, including 425 through the air, while Ottawa (2-2) was held to 268 total yards and shut out in the second half.
First Half
Southwestern struck quickly, capping its opening drive with a 34-yard touchdown run by quarterback Jamie Odom. Ottawa responded with its best drive of the day, going 61 yards on eight plays and finishing with a 4-yard scoring run from
Anthony Powell to tie the game at 7-7.
From there, Southwestern took control. Odom connected with Joe Smyth for a 35-yard touchdown late in the first quarter, then found Caquoy Patterson on an 18-yard strike early in the second. A 41-yard field goal from Preston Fansher and another Odom rushing touchdown stretched the lead to 31-7.
The Braves managed to cut into the deficit just before halftime with a 45-yard field goal by
Ike Prengel, but still trailed 31-10 at the break.
Second Half
Southwestern's offense didn't let up after halftime. Odom opened the third quarter with a 25-yard touchdown pass to Matthew Holthusen. Moments later, Jaydon Sundgren punched in a 1-yard score, and Odom threw his fourth touchdown pass of the day, a 7-yard completion to Hunter Reaves, giving the Moundbuilders a commanding 51-10 advantage heading into the fourth.
In the final period, Thelonius Jones added a 6-yard rushing touchdown, and Fansher closed the scoring with a 20-yard field goal to secure the 61-10 victory.
By the Numbers
- Southwestern QB Jamie Odom accounted for six total touchdowns, throwing for 270 yards and four scores while rushing for 74 yards and two more.
- Holthusen led all receivers with 132 yards and a touchdown on five catches, while Smyth added 90 yards and a score.
