Johnson County Community College: Oakes earned one letter at Johnson County Community College. At JCC, Oakes appeared in 30 games and averaged 17.5 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. He earned Honorable Mention All-Jayhawk honors. Oakes shot 49 percent from the floor, 39.1 percent from behind the 3-pt line, and 75.7 percent from the free throw line. He scored in double figures in 26 games and had a career high 28 points against Southeast Community College (1/11/14).
University of Central Missouri: At UCM, Oakes redshirted his first season for the Mules. In his redshirt freshman season, he appeared in eight games and scored a season high five points against Culver-Stockton College (11/17/12).
High School: In high school, Oakes earned four letters in basketball for the Griffins. He averaged 18 points, 6.6 rebounds, and two assists per game during his senior season. Oakes was named all-conference, all-district, second team all-metro, all-state and district Player of the Year as a senior. During his junior year, he averaged 15 points and 10 rebounds per game. Oakes was an All-Northland pick as a sophomore as well and averaged 12 points and eight rebounds per outing. He was also a National Honors Society inductee.
