#13 Braves Split with Sterling

STERLING, Kan. – The (13) Ottawa University baseball team split its last two games of the series with Sterling College on Saturday afternoon. OU was defeated 5-3 in game one but bounced back to take game two, 10-0.

Game One
Sterling took the early lead in the bottom of the first inning, 2-0. In the top of the fifth, Ottawa tied the game. Luis DeLeon walked to lead off the Braves. Logan Zozaya singled to left, moving DeLeon to second. Zachary Spradlin loaded the bases with an infield single. Tyler Farnham singled to left, scoring both DeLeon and Zozaya to tie the game at 2-2.

The Warriors answered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to retake the lead, 5-2. In the top of the seventh, the Braves cut into the Sterling lead. Zozaya doubled to left and both Spradlin and Farnham were hit by a pitch, loading the bases for the Braves. Holland Boan was walked, scoring Zozaya and OU was within 5-3.

The Braves were not able to rally in their final two at bats of the game and Sterling took the 5-3 victory.

Inside the Box Score Game Two
Ottawa scored first, with five runs in the top of the second inning. Carson Johnson singled to right and advanced to second on a single to right-center by Gabe Eckstaine. Zachary Spradlin was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Jonah Weisner doubled to center, scoring Johnson, Eckstaine and Spradlin to give OU a 3-0 lead.

Tyler Farnham was hit by a pitch, giving OU runners on first and second. Holland Boan reached first on an error by the SC left fielder. That miscue scored Weisner and Farnham, giving Ottawa a 5-0 lead.

The Braves increased their lead over the Warriors in the top of the fourth. Logan Zozaya led off the inning with an infield single. Zachary Spradlin reached first on an error by the SC third baseman, moving Zozaya to third. Spradlin then stole second, giving OU two runners in scoring position. Weisner scored both Zozaya and Spradlin and the Braves led 7-0.

In the top of the fifth, Ottawa pushed three more runs across home plate. Nicholas Sizemore walked, bringing in Brad Grant as a courtesy runner. The Braves loaded the bases with a Carson Johnson walk and a SC miscue that put Eckstaine on first.

Zozaya scored Grant with a sacrifice fly to right and OU had an 8-0 lead. Spradlin scored Johnson with a sacrifice bunt to increase the OU lead to 9-0. Weisner drove in OU's last run of the inning with a single to left, scoring Eckstaine to give the Braves a 10-0 lead.

The Braves did not allow a single Warrior on base in the final two innings of play and Ottawa took the 10-0 victory.

  • Hector Sepulveda pitched four innings, striking out five and only allowing two hits.
  • Eric Reece pitched the fifth, striking out two.
