BSB: #12 Braves Win 5th Straight, Down Saint Mary 16-1

OTTAWA, Kan. – The (12) Ottawa University baseball team earned its fifth straight victory, taking a seven inning, 16-1 win over the University of Saint Mary on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Park. The Braves are in first in the KCAC with a record of 16-3.

After a 1-2-3 top of the first by OU starter, Austin Warfel, Ottawa jumped on top in its bottom half of the inning. In the second pitch of Jonah Weisner's at bat, the ball was sent over the fence and Ottawa led 1-0. Holland Boan walked and then advanced to second and third on two wild pitches. Nicholas Sizemore was hit by a pitch, giving Ottawa runners on the corners.

Carson Johnson singled to left, scoring Boan and Ottawa led 2-0. A passed ball moved Johnson to second and Brad Grant, who was in as a courtesy runner, to third. Luis DeLeon cleared the bases with a double to left, to give OU a 4-0. Lead. A passed ball moved DeLeon to third. Logan Zozaya tripled to center, scoring DeLeon and Ottawa led 5-0.

The Braves extended its lead in the bottom of the second, scoring their three runs with two outs in the inning. Holland Boan hit his 16th home run of the season to give the Braves a 6-0 lead. Connor Jeffers followed that with a double to center. Sizemore singled to left, scoring Jeffers and the Braves had a 7-0 lead. Grant, in as a courtesy runner for Sizemore, stole second and then scored on a double by Johnson to give Ottawa an 8-0 lead.

Ottawa pushed two more runs across home plate in the bottom of the fourth. Tyler Farnham led the inning off with a single to center. He then took second on a wild pitch. Boan walked, giving OU two runners on.

Jeffers flied out to right, but it was a productive out as Farnham was able to tag and move to third. Boan then stole second and on the throw down by the USM catcher, Farnham stole home and Ottawa led 9-0. Sizemore scored Boan with a single to left and the Braves led 10-0.

Saint Mary scored one run in the top of the fifth, cutting OU's lead to 10-1. The Braves answered with five runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Zozaya hit a home run to lead off the bottom of the fifth for the Braves and OU had an 11-1 lead. Jonah Weisner tripled to center and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Farnham, giving OU a 12-1 lead. Boan reached first after being hit by a pitch, a place where he didn't stay long. Connor Jeffers hit a home run over the center field fence, scoring Boan and Ottawa led 14-1. Jasson Hemmerling, entering the game for Sizemore, followed that home run with one of his own, hitting his first collegiate home run to give the Braves a 15-1 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, Ottawa scored one more run. Jakob Billingham pinch hit for Zachary Spradlin. He reached first on a walk and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Grant, pinch hitting for Farnham, reached first on an error by the USM second baseman, scoring Billingham and the Braves took the lead and the game 16-1.
