WINFIELD, Kan. – The Ottawa University men's and women's tennis teams competed at the KCAC Individual Fall Championships on Friday and Saturday. The event was held at the T.H. Vaughn Tennis Complex. The Braves captured the No. 2 Doubles Men's Championships,
Oscar Aguilera finished fourth in No. 3 Singles, and
Isidora Hrnjak placed fourth in No. 1 Singles.
Oscar Giorgio and
Austin Ramirez entered the tournament as the no. 11 seed in no. 2 doubles. They finished the tournament with the championship. Giorgio and Ramirez won their first match on Friday, 8-5 over JP Fort and Raul Moreano of Tabor College.
The duo then defeated Rodrigo Sanchez and Damian Rosas from Bethel College, 9-7, in the quarterfinals. On Saturday, the pair won their semifinal match 8-5 over Diego Navarro and Jorge Catala Ortiz from Oklahoma Wesleyan. In the championship match, Giorgio and Ramirez had to rally past Southwestern College's Federico Poi and Logan Engela, 9-7, to in the title.
Hrnjak took an 8-2 victory in the women's no. 1 singles over Michaela Crowe of Kansas Wesleyan University. In a very tough semifinal to evental champion, Catherine Coe of Southwestern, Hrnjak lost 8-7 (9-7). She withdrew from her third place match due to an injury, finishing in fourth.
Returning to the men's tournament, in no. 1 singles, Giorgio fell in the quarterfinals to Milan Bucek of Bethel College, 8-6.
Oscar Aguilera took an 8-0 victory in no. 3 singles over Jerod Zimmerman from the University of Saint Mary. He won his quarterfinal match, 8-5 over Clement Dardaine of OKWU, 8-5.
In the semifinals, Aguilera lost to Martin Milos from McPherson College 8-5. Playing in the third place match against Tomas Quercio from Bethel College, Auilera fell 8-6 to finish fourth overall.
Erik Czapinski won his first round match in no. 4 singles, 8-4, over Carlos Robles from Evangel University. In the quarterfinals, he was defeated by eventual champion JP Fort of Tabor College, 8-2.
Competing in no. 5 singles, Ramirez won his first round match, 8-4, over Ethan Chouinard of Friends University. In the quarterfinals, he was defeated by Oscar Bouwer of McPherson College, 8-1.
Ottawa returns to action on Friday, Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 at the ITA Fall Regional Championships in Wichita, Kan.
