Braves Start KCAC Tournament Play on Friday


The Braves won their 11th conference series this season last weekend against Sterling College. OU won game one in seven innings, 13-3, fell in game two, 5-3, but rebounded to take game three, 10-0.

OU clinched the program's eighth KCAC Championship with its 2-1 series victory over Sterling College last weekend. The win qualifies the Braves for its second trip to the NAIA Opening Round.

Ottawa is 41-6 overall and finishes the 2022 season with a record of 29-4 in the KCAC. Through 47 games, OU has scored 432 runs and hit 77 home runs. The Braves have a .329 batting average, a .440 on base percentage, and a .570 slugging percentage.

The Braves have two pitchers that have struck out 100 or more batters this season. Stephen Norrell has 100 strike outs and Tyler Bryant has 101 strike outs. It is the first time in program history that OU has two pitchers with 100 or more strike outs in a season. It is the second time that Norrell has struck out 100 or more batters in a season. He finished 2021 with 125 strike outs. Hector Sepulveda is sitting at 95 strike outs this season. Only two other OU pitchers has struck out 100 or more batters in a season: Eric Cordell (107) in 2009 and Brian Woods (102) in 2005.  

OU had nine players named to the All-KCAC Teams. Head Coach Gabe Grinder was named KCAC Coach of the Year, Holland Boan was named KCAC Player of the Year, and Tyler Bryant was selected KCAC Pitcher of the Year. First Team: Holland Boan (1B), Jonah Weisner (2B), Tyler Bryant (SP), Hector Sepulveda (SP), Creed Jeffers (RP). Second Team: Nicholas Sizemore (C), Connor Jeffers (LF), Stephen Norrell (SP). Gold Glove: Nicholas Sizemore (C) and Tyler Farnham (CF).

Ottawa is 53-68 against Friends University. The Braves took the season series 2-1 on March 13 and March 14 in Ottawa, falling in game one, 14-12 before taking game two, 3-2 and game three 7-6. The Braves are 8-15 against Oklahoma Wesleyan University and won the season series, 3-0: 7-1, 11-8, 6-1 in Bartlesville on March 4 and March 5. OU is on a five game winning streak against the Eagles and have won six out of their last seven meetings.

The Braves are 12-15 in the KCAC Tournament and are the defending tournament champions. OU defeated McPherson College 12-7 in the championship game last season to qualify for the program's first NAIA Opening Round. Ottawa is  0-3 vs. Bethany College, 2-2 vs. Kansas Wesleyan, 5-2 vs. Tabor College, 3-1 vs. Sterling College, 0-6 vs. University of Saint Mary, 1-1 vs. Oklahoma Wesleyan University, and 1-0 vs. McPherson College in the KCAC Tournament.

Jonah Weisner led OU in batting average (.441), Holland Boan is Ottawa's leader in RBI (67), Creede Jeffers leads the team in ERA (2.48), and Tyler Bryant is OU's leader in strike outs (101).
